Psychologists Reveal What These 11 Clothing Colors Say About Your Personality

As they say, first impressions are everything. The first judgments people make about us are based on our appearances, including our clothes. According to psychologists, even the color of what we wear conveys different aspects of our personalities, and most of us tend to favor one in particular.

"Even if your wardrobe is filled with clothes of a variety of colors and shades, there is always the color that you give a greater preference to because you feel more comfortable and confident in it. It is the very color that reflects your character," said David Zyla,  stylist and author of the book, "Color Your Style".

So what impressions are you giving off when you wear blue, black, or yellow? Here's what psychologists have to say about 11 different colors:

1. Black

Black is definitely the color you want to wear if you're trying to impress. Research has found that people who wear black are perceived as smart, confident, attractive, ambitious, and serious.

2. Brown

Much like the dirt beneath our feet, brown is stable and reliable. People who wear this color tend to be more respectful, conservative, and the kind of person you can depend on.

3. Blue

"Blue is the best color to put on to an interview because it sends out confidence and reliability," wrote journalist and psychologist, Lisa Johnson Mandell. "Therefore, many working uniforms or business suits are of blue color." Blue also has a calming effect on those who view it, so those who wear it are often seen as trustworthy, serene people.

4. Green

Green is known as the feel-good color. "The pleasantness of green comes from its kinship with nature, which causes a feeling of peace and contentment," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute and the author of the book, "More Alive With Color." Additionally, people who favor green in their wardrobe tend to be more active, compassionate, and financially stable.

5. Purple

Seen as a royal color, purple conveys elegance, wealth, and style, but those who wear it are also seen as creative, artistic beings. Experts say those with a lot of purple in their wardrobe are also emotionally sensitive, making them unpredictable at times.

6. Red

Red in an attention-grabbing color associated with power and strength. Those who wear it are often full of energy and very excitable. "Red is the color of passion and power. You should give your preference to this color if you are going to persuade or impress somebody," said Kenny Frimpong, the manager of the brand of Italian menswear, Eredi Pisano.

7. Yellow

Yellow is the happy color. If you wear it a lot, you're probably an optimistic, cheerful person who brightens up the room. The color is even said to increase your heart rates and enhance your metabolism.

8. White

White symbolizes innocence and purity. That's why it's the color of most wedding dresses, as it's traditionally meant to reflect the bride's purity (virginity). People who wear it tend to be neat, organized, and are the type to see the glass as half full.

9. Pink

Pink is a very feminine color that has a calming effect. People who wear tend to be romantic, kind, optimistic, and confident, especially if they're men.

10. Orange

Orange gives off a warm, fun, and cheerful energy. It's no surprise, then, that those who wear it are friendly and full of energy. They're also not afraid of change; rather, they welcome it with open arms.

11. Gray

Gray is a neutral color, so it makes sense that people who wear it don't like attracting attention. If you wear a lot of gray, you're probably an independent person, perhaps even a loner who prefers your own company.

Which of these colors describes you the best? Blue is my favorite, and I'd say it nails my personality.
