Of all the places there are to gift birth in this world, in the Red Sea just doesn’t sound like the most ideal. I mean, it’s salty, there are waves, and there are many, many tourists to be found along its shores at any given time. To me, that just sounds like a recipe for natal disaster.
But for one Russian tourist, I guess it sounded like a pretty sweet deal, since she, her husband, and her doctor who specializes in water births donned their swimsuits and made their way to the Red Sea for a water birth in front of understandably stunned beachgoers in the beach town of Dahab.
So let’s start with what exactly a water birth us, for those of us who aren’t in the know. By definition, a water birth is “a birth in which the mother spends the final stages of labor in a birthing pool, with delivery taking place either in or out of the water.” Alrighty then.
There is a bit of debate surrounding whether or not water births are safe for Mom and her baby. “There’s actually pretty good evidence that it’s safe to labor in the tub,” says Dr. Aaron Caughey, an associate professor of maternal-fetal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. “But there’s less good evidence that it’s safe for the baby and even safe for the mom, in terms of infection risk, to give birth in the tub.”
Oddly, there appears to be a new trend of young pregnant women heading to the Red Sea to perform public water births, and this mom is just the latest. With just a bikini and a snorkel, she hit the water when she went into labor followed by the baby’s father and a doctor armed with a bucket that was later used to carry the placenta. Here’s a taste of the eye-full beachgoers got that day.
Here we have Mom in the water.
And here’s Dad with the doctor holding the newborn child. Please note the umbilical cord.
All in all, it seems like the little one came out just fine. What a way to enter the world!
Well, you can’t say this wasn’t unique! While the thought of doing this personally horrifies me, to each her own. Best of luck to Mom and Baby!
