Ally Opfer didn’t have much time to get used to the fact she was going to be a mother. In fact, she was already in labor when she arrived at the hospital. Though she thought her pain was caused by kidney stones, an ultrasound revealed she was 38-weeks pregnant.

The 23-year-old’s son, Oliver, was delivered soon after by c-section. The Cleveland mother had a healthy boy, despite not following a planned diet and prenatal plan.

“I always loved babies and knew I wanted to be a mom one day,” Opfer told “Not necessarily right then.”

Opfer shared her emotions after her son was delivered: “I was shocked and didn’t really believe it. I didn’t realize how much I needed him until I had him.”

It’s been a year since Oliver’s birth, and Opfer, along with her family are still baffled by the little guy’s sudden arrival. Opfer explained she’s always had irregular periods. When they abruptly stopped, she took several pregnancy tests, which all came back negative. She didn’t think there was anything amiss.

“I felt fine, I never started showing, everything was normal,” Opfer recalled about her pregnancy.  “It could be because the way I was carrying or the way my son was in my stomach. I’m not really sure why I didn’t show.”

Opfer isn’t a drinker or smoker, though she did consume tuna and deli meats during her pregnancy. Doctors advise avoiding these foods.

“I wasn’t eating healthy either,” she joked.
