The loyal dog never budged from his spot..

This story is about a loyal dog's faithful vigil by his owner's grave, which has unfortunately came to an end "“ after 11 long years. The dog, Capitan, began living at the cemetery after his owner, Miguel Guzman, had passed away back in 2006. The dog would even sleep beside his former owner's graveside every night. Capitan crossed the rainbow bridge by his human's graveside "“ he was 15-years-old. The dog had passed away due to kidney failure.  

Capitan's remarkable story of loyalty began back on 24 March 2006, when his owner, Miguel, had died. When Capitán realized Miguel was no longer at home, he left to search for him. Miraculously, he had managed to track down Miguel's grave which was located in the nearby Municipal Cemetery of Villa Carlos Paz in Cordoba, Argentina! Every day at 6 pm, Capitan would lay by Miguel's headstone, resting there for the night until morning came.

Back in 2005, Miguel had brought Capitán, a German Shepherd mix, home as a surprise for his son Damián.  When Capitán disappeared just after her husband's death, his wife Veronica and Damián searched for him, but to no avail. When Damien went to visit his father in the cemetery, Capitán was there. No one knew how Capitán had discovered where Miguel was laid to rest, either. His family tried to bring Capitán home, the dog only refused. Capitán would always return to the cemetery soon after.

Cemetery director Hector Baccega remarked that the dog earned the affection of both precinct workers and cemetery caretakers. They had made sure he was fed and vaccinated on a daily and regular basis. Once, Capitán broke his front leg, and a vet was quickly called in to care for his injury.

Capitán would go to his old home to visit Veronica and Damien on an occasional basis. Veronica has come to accept that Capitán does not want to stay with them, but wishes to stay close to his deceased best friend instead. Damien also recognized that Capitán was caring for his father in their stead. Damien had wanted to bring Capitán home to stay at first, but he knew in his heart that all the dog wanted was to return to his father's side.

Hector Baccega and Capitán would walk through the cemetery every day. But when early evening approached, the dog would head to Miguel's tomb and lay down next to the headstone.

Four years back, Capitan was unfortunately diagnosed with kidney failure during a monthly check-up with the family vet. Both the veterinarian and his family felt it was best to let Capitan carry out his daily routine as he had did for so many years past.
