Josiah Duggar Is Engaged, But The Circumstances Are Strange

Just days after Joy-Anna Duggar welcomed her first child, the Duggars have more news to announce!

Josiah, the 8th child in the Duggar succession, is engaged to his partner Lauren Swanson! The news was confirmed on the family's website, sharing in the exciting event.

"We are so excited to announce that Josiah and Lauren are officially engaged!" reads the statement. "We have prayed for many years that the Lord would bring the right spouses to each of our children. We have known Lauren and her family for a very long time and have seen how she has grown in her knowledge and understanding of the Lord. She is a wonderful, caring, compassionate young lady, full of zeal for Christ. We are very thankful for her. We pray that their lives together will be full of joy and happiness and that God will use their lives for His service. We are looking forward to another Duggar wedding soon!"

But fans were quick to point out two very strange issues surrounding the new couple's engagement.

It was just six weeks ago that Swanson, 18, and Duggar, 21, announced their courtship, after Josiah had already broken off another one previously.

The quick timing had some questioning the motives of the young couple.

"He's probably desperate to get some, he is 21 after all lol. Only so much side hugging those kids can take!"

"Wow. You don't even know someone well enough after 6 weeks to get engaged. They will get married in like 2 months now."

"OMG that girl is a CHILD. why so these families think this is ok. they are rushing to get married WAY TOO YOUNG because they want to do more than side hug and it's making me absolutely sick. she'll be pregnant within a month of being married. i wish someone would tell these girls their bodies are made for things other than making babies."

The other problem was that many fans were under the impression that Josiah was gay, which is why he was sent away to ALERT Academy. Though the Academy is meant to strengthen the attendees's relationships with God, it's long been rumored that the "troubled teen" camp was a place to send youth who were gay, but whose families didn't agree with their lifestyle.

A former camper recalled one of their more treacherous adventures.

"The main point [ALERT] tried to drive home to their "˜trainees' (typically 16-18 years old) was that no matter what adversity or difficulty you are facing, either physical, mental, or spiritual, all you need to do is cry out to God and he will get you through it. The way they taught us to do this with the physical aspect was by hiking with 60-80 pound back packs at nothing short of a speed-walk pace which often turned into a jog for miles on end without ever disclosing how far or long we were going."

Of course, it's all based in speculation, but the fact that only certain members of the family are sent to the ALERT Academy for months on end leads many to believe there's more to it than finding God.

Regardless, we're happy for Lauren and Josiah as they begin their journey towards marriage together! They are the only ones who know the truth between them, and that's what matters.
