Who hasn't brought home some lovely plump, ripe berries from the grocer's produce department with the full intentions of eating them right away, or making a sumptuous dessert with them, then found them in the back of the fridge a week later in a molded mass of sadness? Well, life happens to all of us. We have the kids' sports practices and games, community meetings, runny noses, skinned knees, and late meetings. Many times in the hurry of life, the berries get accidentally pushed to the back of the refrigerator.

What if you could prepare them in a few minutes when you get home from the store so those yummy berries would last for weeks instead of simply days? Well, this nifty four-step hack with everyday ingredients will save you money and make you proud with each berry bite you take. You won't believe how simple this little hack is and how much longer you will be able to keep and enjoy your berries until you try this easy trick yourself in your own kitchen. It consists of only four steps that you could almost do in your sleep with two ingredients you have in your kitchen--water and vinegar, a bowl, a mesh strainer, a colander, or a salad spinner, some paper towels, and a large plate.

Place your strawberries fresh from the supermarket's produce section into a large bowl. Add one part vinegar to five parts water to the berries in the bowl. For instance, for a pint of strawberries, add one half cup of vinegar to two and a half cups of water. Stir the strawberries in the vinegar and water mix and let soak for five minutes. You can really use apple cider or white vinegar. Some use white vinegar, concerned that the apple cider vinegar may add its apple flavor to the berries. Most people say there is no residual flavor from the vinegar at all at the end of the process. (The vinegar safely kills off mold spores that sad to say, are already growing on your beautiful berries.) Drain the strawberries and place on a bed of paper towels to dry for at least 20 minutes. When the berries appear sufficiently dry, place them in a container and store in the refrigerator. Some people leave the fruit on dry paper towels on the plate, but others prefer an aerated fruit and veggie keeper. An aerated or vented container is often preferred because it keeps the berries from drying out depending on how long you can resist eating them. If you don't have a special container like that and don't want to keep them on the plate in the refrigerator, just keep the berry basket from the grocery store, wash and dry it, then reuse it with your prepared, super simple hacked strawberries.

This amazingly simple trick seems too easy to believe, but it works because of science. The vinegar kills off the mold spores and keeping the berries dry inhibits mold growth as well. This trick can really be used with any type of berry. Try it with blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries-- any kind of berry! Your berries will last for weeks in your refrigerator now instead of days as they would without the simple vinegar and water soak. Enjoy your berries in any number of your favorite recipes or pop them fresh in your mouth whenever you like.
