"Long Island Medium" Theresa Caputo Finally Opens Up About Her Divorce

I've been a fan of Theresa Caputo ever since her show Long Island Medium premiered on TLC back in 2011.

I'm not going to lie, I'm still a little skeptical about some aspects of the show, but if there was one thing I was sure of, it was how much Theresa and her husband, Larry, loved each other.

At the time of the series premiere, the couple had been married for 22 years, and it showed.

Larry and Theresa first met when the medium started working at his family's oil company as a part-time customer service representative.

He was 11 years her senior, but that didn't stop the pair from falling in love and getting married two years later.

Larry and Theresa have always stood by each other, even when the going got tough, like when the medium started experiencing severe panic attacks brought on by her rare ability to communicate with the dead. He knew that there was "something off about her," but he stuck around.

"I just cared for her enough that I wasn't going to let that affect us," Larry told People. "I wasn't going to break up with her because she has this issue. I felt like I was her anchor in those moments. It was a pattern and it wouldn't last long, I knew that, so it just a matter of getting through whatever amount of time it took her to go through that anxiety attack."

The couple welcomed two children, Larry Jr. and Victoria, and formed their perfect little family. Their relationship continued to blossom and grow stronger, and they even renewed their vows on the show a few seasons ago.

Larry gave an adorable speech that reiterated his love for Theresa, and we all really believed that only death will tear them apart.

Sadly, things unfolded very differently just a few years later.

During the last season of their show, Theresa admitted that something "has changed" in her marriage and that it was falling apart.

"Since the last season of Long Island Medium and through a period of time, Larry and I's relationship has changed," Theresa said. "We've been there for each other, you know, through thick and thin, you know, good times, and right now are not such great times."

"I don't understand it. I lay in bed, and I say to myself, "˜How did this happen? How did I get here?'"

The reality TV star explained that they're "both not happy," but they were trying to work through their issues.

Unfortunately, they weren't successful in saving the marriage, so in December 2017, the couple announced they were getting a separation.

"After 28 years of marriage, we have decided to legally separate," read the joint statement to People. "We will always love each other and our two wonderful children. We are united in supporting each other and our family. Please respect our privacy during this time."

In the days following the announcement, Larry opened up about where things went wrong.

"I think a lot of the frustration has to do with us not spending the time together anymore," he admitted to a friend during the season finale of the show. "Along with that comes the lack of communication so it's like losing your best friend. It's hard."

He also revealed that they went to therapy to help them with their problems, but the therapist advised that they should spend some time apart.

"I just can't imagine our lives not together," he said. "I just don't know where our lives would go from there."

At the time, sources close to the couple told TMZ that a reconciliation was possible because they still loved each other, but according to Theresa's recent interview with GoodHousekeeping.com that isn't the case.

The 50-year-old has opened up about her split for the first time, and she's revealed that she's been working hard at trying to move forward without Larry.

As for her relationship with Larry now, she told the publication that they're "in a good place."

"[We're] working and finding our place. We've been together for a very long time. And people change. We all change. None of us are the same we were 10 years ago, five years ago, regardless of our work or what we're doing with our lives. We change, as people."

Theresa and Larry are now living on opposite coasts, she is in New York, while he currently calls Los Angeles home.

Seeing that her marriage was a big part of the show, fans were concerned about the fate of the series. Luckily, Theresa has some answers.

For those who were worried that Theresa's personal struggles may affect the show, you have nothing to worry about.

Theresa explained that she has never let her personal feelings affect the work she does.

"When I work, I have to clear out my personal thoughts, feelings and emotions," Theresa said. "It's something that I always do."

"Then I can take on the emotions of the soul that I'm channeling and the person that I'm reading," she explains. "It is hard to go into work having a tough day, but once I start working it's all about my work and spirits just kind of clear everything out for me.

In fact, Theresa has buried herself into her work since the separation, and new episodes of Long Island Medium will be back on TV on April 8.

As usual, Larry will appear in the upcoming episodes of the show. In one of the trailers, he is heard telling Theresa "We can't go on like this," before he's seen crying in another scene.

Along with work, Theresa credited her fans for helping her get through some of the hardest moments of the breakup.

She recounted a story about a man who approached her on the street shortly after news of the separation broke.

"He said "˜I'm very sorry that you and Larry are going through this, but when we watched you guys, my wife and I looked at each other and we said to each other this is what's happening to us we are not alone,'" she said. "And right there was my validation again that what I do is so important."

Theresa, who was out with her father at the time, said that the man and his wife have now turned to therapy for help.

"At the end of the day, regardless of what happens to that couple, it was at least that feeling of "˜Oh my God, yes other people do go through this,' and for me it just goes to show how Long Island Medium helps people," she added. "What we do as a family [can help] people feel that they're not alone."

"We really feel truly blessed that we have such amazing fans and the support we've gotten is just amazing."

It's sad to see Theresa and Larry grow apart, but I'm glad that they've remained amicable with each other.
