I'm at a risk of developing heart disease or experiencing a stroke because there is a history of high cholesterol on my dad's side of the family.

Having a genetic risk of high cholesterol doesn't necessarily mean I will have it, but I have always taken extra precautions to ensure that I stay healthy for as long as possible.

While watching my diet and exercising regularly are two important ways I try to maintain good cholesterol levels and a healthy heart, I also have other natural remedies that keep my body in tip-top shape.

There's one drink in particular that my entire family swears by after drinking it regularly for years and experiencing wonderful results.

The recipe is borrowed from ancient Germany and is believed to be effective in lowering cholesterol, unblocking arteries, preventing infections, and giving the immune system a boost.

Additionally, you'll notice an improvement in how you feel overall. I haven't caught the flu in years, even when it's a particularly nasty strain, and my energy is often through the roof.

According to Healthy Food House, the natural remedy clears your body of toxins, prevents the formation of kidney stones and stops vascular congestion in its tracks.

The concoction is extremely easy to make and you definitely have all the ingredients in your pantry.

Contrary to popular belief, not all cholesterol is bad, however, when you consume excess amounts of foods that contain high cholesterol, then you risk the chance of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) or "bad" cholesterol building up in your arteries.

What you want to be doing is consuming food and drinks that lower LDL or boost high-density lipoproteins (HDL). That's why this cure works so well.

The recipe calls for ingredients that are all effective in lowering LDL, while improving other functions of the body.

Lemons have great detoxifying properties, they'll also boost your energy and help with digestion. Ginger contains anti-inflammatory and blood thinning properties, and garlic will keep cholesterol particles from sticking to the artery walls.

You don't need to have high cholesterol or heart problems to consume this drink, but always remember to consult with a doctor before you incorporate it into your diet.

Here's what you'll need:

- 4 cloves of garlic, peeled

- 2 tablespoons of grated ginger

- 4 organic lemons, unpeeled

- Water

- Honey, optional

Directions:

1. Wash and cut lemons into wedges or slices and set aside.

2. Add the garlic, lemon, and ginger into a blender and blend until the mixture is smooth.

3. Add the mixture into a pan with water and bring to a boil, stirring frequently.

4. Once it comes to a boil, take it off the heat and let it cool.

5. Strain into a jar and bottle, and use as needed.

How often should you be drinking it?

It is recommended that you drink it on an empty stomach about two hours before you have a meal. You can do this daily for three weeks, then take a break for one week before you repeat it for another three weeks.

You will notice a significant difference in how you feel within a few days, and by the time you start round two, you might begin to feel like a new person, refreshed and full of energy.
