Ryan and Mellencamp, who is best known for hits like Jack and Diane, started dating in 2011, but after three years, they made the decision to part ways.

At the time, a source close to the couple revealed that "distance" played a role in the couple's break up.

Three years after calling it quits, fans of the actress and the musician were just starting to accept that they won't get back together when they rekindled their romance in May 2017.

While it's unclear is Ryan pursued other relationships in that time, Mellencamp reportedly dated model Christie Brinkley for over a year.

Although they never confirmed their reunion, they were spotted together last spring attending a number of events and going on dates. According to People, the pair spent Christmas Day together and caught a New York Knicks basketball game with their two sons from their previous relationships.

If Ryan and Mellencamp make it to the altar, it would be the second time for the 56-year-old actress and third for the rocker.

The When Harry Met Sally star was previously married to Dennis Quaid, and for a while, they were considered one of Hollywood's most beloved couples.

They welcomed a son named Jack in 1992, and had a strong marriage for the next nine years.

In an unforeseen twist, Ryan allegedly had an affair with her co-star Russell Crowe and this led to the demise of her marriage.

In a 2008 interview with InStyle, the petite actress revealed that after news of her relationship with Crowe broke, Hollywood treated her like "the scarlet woman."

She also added that her marriage to Quaid was already in shambles when she cheated, and it didn't help that ex-husband was involved with other women too.

The breakdown of her marriage and how she was portrayed in the tabloids forced Ryan to step out of the spotlight, and lead a quiet life away from Hollywood. She moved to New York City with Mellencamp in search of a fresh start.

Ryan has been slowly making a comeback, and she's currently working on a comedy series titled Picture Paris. According to Deadline, the upcoming show is expected to film in France, and Ryan will be one of the co-producers.

We're really happy things are looking up for Ryan. Congratulations to her and Mellencamp on their engagement!
