In case you forgot, during the event, Melania presented the outgoing first lady with a Tiffany & Co. box. Although the gesture was nice, it was unexpected, considering how structured the event was, so the moments that followed were very awkward.

"You brought a gift!" the first lady said to Melania at the time. "I'll take care of the protocol here," chimed in former President Barack Obama.

As everyone else was preparing for a group photo, Michelle had no idea what to do with the box, and her reaction quickly got turned into one of most memorable memes of that year.

Now, Michelle, 54, has finally revealed what really going through her mind at the time and what was inside the box.

In the sneak peek of her interview with Ellen, Michelle admitted that she was caught off guard by Melania's gift.

"Well, there's all this protocol. I mean, this is like a state visit, so they tell you that you're going to do this, they're going to stand here. Never before do you get this gift, so I'm sort of like okay," she told the host.

Michelle explained that she tried to look for an aide who could take the gift while she posed for the camera, but no one was around.

"What am I supposed to do with this gift?" she recalled thinking. "And everyone cleared out and no one would come and take the box. And I'm thinking do we take the picture with [it]?"

Thankfully, Barack stepped in and made the moment a little less uncomfortable.

"And then my husband saved the day "“ see he grabbed the box and took it back inside. But everybody cleared out. No staff, no one. I was like what do you do with the box?" the mother-of-two recounted.

For those who of us who have been dying to know what was in the iconic Tiffany blue box, Michelle revealed that "It was a lovely frame."

It's been a long-standing tradition for outgoing presidents to host their successors at the White House on the morning of Inauguration as a welcome gesture. Former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura Bush, hosted Barack and Michelle in the Blue Room of the White House back in 2009. However, a gift exchange is out of the norm.

Michelle's interview will air on Thursday, February 1.
