For decades now, People magazine has been choosing an A-list celebrity to be on their cover as the year's "Sexiest Man Alive."

Many of our favorite celebrities, including Hugh Jackman, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and David Beckham have all held the title in the past.

Of course, there are differing opinions about the publication's choice every year, but in 2017, things got especially awkward when country singer Blake Shelton was bestowed with the honor.

Social media was divided over the publication's decision, and many made sure to express their disappointment as bluntly as possible.

Even Shelton himself didn't take People's choice too seriously.

"Y'all must be running out of people," he told the magazine. "Like, wow, we're down to somebody who is somewhat symmetrical."

Amid all the hoopla, people started naming other famous men who could've been crowned winner instead.

There was one particular actor whose name stood out from the rest: Idris Elba.

"Hey @people, you spelled "Idris Elba" wrong," read one tweet. Another asked, "Idris Elba is still alive no?"

Well, it looks like People did listen to the public after all when choosing 2018's winner.

On November 6, the magazine unveiled of their annual "Sexiest Man Alive" issue, showing off none other than the beloved Idris Elba on the cover.

While fans aren't surprised that the 46-year-old heartthrob finally got picked, the Luther star and holder of the Order of the British Empire was not expecting it at all.

"I was like, "˜Come on, no way. Really?'" the actor told People. "Looked in the mirror, I checked myself out. I was like, "˜Yeah, you are kind of sexy today.' But to be honest, it was just a nice feeling. It was a nice surprise "” an ego boost for sure."

Elba got the first glimpse of the cover during Monday night's episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

"It's amazing! I'm really, really happy with that," Elba said. "Thank you so much People magazine for making me sexiest man in the world." He added, "My mum is going to be very, very proud."

According to the reactions on social media, Elba's mom isn't the only one who is very proud.

Beside being crowned "Sexiest Man Alive," Elba's year has been filled with many special moments.

He was one of the many celebrity guests at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding in May, an occasion he called "one of the highlights of my life."

The Avengers star will soon have his turn at watching his bride walk down the aisle. Elba, who is notoriously private, proposed to his girlfriend Sabrina Dhowre back in February, just around Valentine's Day.
