On November 14, Prince Charles turns 70 years old, and to mark the joyous milestone, the royals released two new family photographs, giving us a glimpse into a side of the family we don't see often.

The Prince of Wales and his family, minus the Queen and Prince Philip, gathered in the gardens of his London home to pose for some photos, which were reportedly taken while the BBC filmed the documentary Prince, Son & Heir: Charles at 70.

As we've come to expect from the royals, not even a single hair looks out of place in the first photograph taken by Chris Jackson.

However, in the second snap the royals proved that just like the average family, they can have fun and share laughs.

In the exceptionally candid photo, the family remain in the same positions as before, but this time five-year-old Prince George is giggling, and so is his aunt Meghan Markle.

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, is pointing at the camera while sharing a cuddly moment with three-year-old Princess Charlotte. Prince William, his wife Kate Middleton and brother Prince Harry also showed off their pearly whites with the biggest grins.

The photo also gave us a rare look at seven-month-old Prince Louis, who many have since agreed looks just like his brother George.

"It was particularly special to capture such an informal and relaxed family portrait over a fun afternoon in the gardens of Clarence House!" Jackson wrote on Instagram.

While many people focused on how adorable and photogenic the family looks, there were some who were left wondering why Charles mother, Queen Elizabeth II, was absent from such an important moment.

Those who are well-versed in the family's inner-workings believe that Her Majesty intentionally skipped the photoshoot because it's a sign that she is preparing to step back and show the world the faces of the new era of the monarchy.

On several instances this year, the Queen relinquished some of her responsibilities to Charles as well as the other senior members of her family.

In addition to the photos, Clarence House also shared a photo montage of Charles through the years on social media.

The palace also released 70 facts about Charles, and turns out there are a few things didn't know about him.

Here are a few of them:

• The Prince became the first heir to the throne to earn a university degree in 1970. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Cambridge University's Trinity College, and he also earned his Master's from the same university in 1975.
• The Prince does not eat lunch.
• The Prince's favourite tea is Darjeeling with honey and milk.
• The Prince has a frog named after him: Hyloscirtus Princecherlesi or Prince Charles Magnificent Tree Frog.
• The Prince is a keen painter and had a watercolour displayed in the Royal Academy's 1987 summer exhibition, after it was submitted anonymously.
