Salma Hayek Opens Up About Surviving The Deadly Earthquake That Killed Her Loved Ones

In a span of two weeks, Mexico experienced two powerful earthquakes that left a massive destruction in its wake.

The second, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake, occurred on September 19 and has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 225 people, injured 1900 and toppled homes across central Mexico.

In the aftermath, people everywhere have been trying to help the victims, but for one celebrity this earthquake has hit home in many ways.

Actress Salma Hayek released a video announcing that she will be contributing funds to help with relief efforts. In the short clip, the Desperado star also shared heartbreaking details about living through the 1985 earthquake that killed over 10,000 people.

The actress opened up about surviving the "horrific" disaster to put emphasis on the importance of relief efforts.

"After the 1985 earthquake in Mexico City, I was evacuated from my building," Salma said in the emotional video.

The actress added that many of her friends and family members, including "an uncle that was very, very close to me," died during in the aftermath.

Rebuilding after such a large scale disaster is by no means easy so Hayek has pledged to contribute $100,000 to UNICEF, but her generosity doesn't end there.

"I am starting a Crowdrise to try to raise money to help families who are going through this nightmare right now in Mexico," she continued. "I implore to your hearts... to your compassion to help. Anything that you can give will make a big difference. I will match the first $100,000 that are donated."
