Sarah Hyland, one of the stars of the popular sitcom Modern Family, revealed that her 14-year-old cousin Trevor died in a car accident with an alleged drunk driver on Saturday.
Hyland's uncle, Clifford, was driving with her cousin in the passenger seat when their vehicle collided with another car.
While her uncle is recovering in hospital, Hyland says that Trevor died from his injuries after being ejected from the car.
The actress shared a link to a GoFundMe page, where she asked fans to donate and help cover her uncle's medical bills and her cousin's funeral costs.
"This is my 14-year-old cousin Trevor. Yesterday, he was killed by a drunk driver. My Uncle is still in the hospital in need of more surgeries. PLEASE swipe up to help," Hyland wrote on Instagram.
On the GoFundMe page, Trevor's family shared more details of the deadly crash.
"Trevor and his dad were driving to a show choir event and were involved in a serious car accident due to a drunk driver," they wrote.
"His dad, Bryan, is recovering physically, but sadly Trevor has gained his wings and is singing and playing some crazy football in heaven."
In her second post about the accident, Hyland railed against the driver who allegedly caused it.
Hyland also shared the tragic detail that, although Trevor was wearing a seat belt during the crash, the other car was moving so fast he was still thrown out of the vehicle.
She added that the suspected drunk driver was under arrest, "and I hope to God he spends the rest of his life in prison."
Fox News reported that the man blamed for Trevor's death, Jeffery Eggeling, was in fact arrested and booked for two counts of DUI causing serious bodily injury and leaving the scene of a personal injury crash.
A report from the Omaha Police Department said that Eggeling drove through a red light before crashing into the other car, and then attempted to escape the scene on foot.
In a moving show of support, Hyland's TV family members, Ariel Winter and Nolan Gould, both shared links to the GoFundMe page as well.
