Teen Gets Tattoo Of Late Grandmother's Voice Recording

Sakyrah Morris

A Chicago teenager got a permanent reminder of her late grandmother's love by getting a truly unique tattoo.

After the death of her cherished grandmother, Sakyrah Morris decided keep her memory alive by getting a tattoo of her last voicemail.

The ink forms a replica of the voicemail's sound waves and thanks to an iPhone app, every word can be heard out loud.

With the help of a new technology called Skin Motion, Morris can hold her iPhone camera over her tattoo and activate the recording on her phone through image recognition, BBC's Newsbeat reports.

"I had been holding onto that voicemail for what's been almost three years now and I got the idea recently to get it tattooed," Morris says. "I figured it'd be something permanent that would be across my heart to be more meaningful."

The voicemail was sent to Morris a month before her passing, where her grandmother can be heard wishing the teenager a happy birthday before saying "I love you."

She tells her granddaughter: "You should be up and awake because it's your birthday, you rock-headed little kid."

A video of it playing was shared on Twitter and has been viewed more than three million times.

"I just want to take this time to thank my grandma. My everything. Words can't explain how much I miss her. Every blessing that is being sent my way right now is because of her. I know that she orchestrated all of this for me. I will do nothing but continue to make her proud," Morris wrote on Twitter.

Morris said while she got the tattoo for herself, she's thrilled her ink is having a positive impact on others whose loved ones have passed away as well.

"She was the most amazing woman, always helping people in the community and making sure they were OK," Morris says. "It really made me happy to see what a positive impact my tattoo has had on others."

"I've had so many people tell me they're now thinking about keeping voicemails for the memories," she adds.
