The 5-Step Guide To Making The Ultimate Grilled Cheese Sandwich

We take food seriously here at Shared, which is why we're always pushing the envelope to bring you the tastiest recipes and most mouthwatering creations, because even the simplest recipes can be improved. Take the grilled cheese sandwich for instance. Two slices of white bread, some melted cheese and a little butter. Couldn't be simpler, right?

Well, if that's enough to satisfy you we're glad you're happy. But if you need a sandwich that will change the way you think about the words "grilled cheese," this guide will put you on the right path.

1. Don't skimp on the bread

Any 2 pieces of bread are enough to make a sandwich, but if you want the ultimate grilled cheese you'll need to think a little more about what you pick. Homemade bread or something from the bakery at your grocery store will perform better than a regular loaf.

Remember: you want a thinner slice, otherwise the cheese won't melt properly. But it doesn't have to be fresh, because grilling the bread with butter and cheese will add some life to it.

2. Butter every side

This is controversial, but putting butter on the inside and outside of your bread guarantees it will grill nicer, and won't stick to the pan. Personally, I like to use a layer of mayonnaise on the outside, because it gives the sandwich an extra crunch. Whatever you choose, be generous, or else you'll have to scrape up your sandwich with a spatula.

3. Choose you cheese

There's nothing wrong with using classic American cheddar - it's the obvious choice - but we like to shake things up sometimes. Use a melting cheese like Fontina or Gruyere, and keep your slices thin. You can also grate your cheese, which makes the sandwich extra gooey.

4. Toast the bread ahead of time

There's a method to the madness of grilled cheese. Butter the bed, throw it onto the skillet to toast, then build the sandwich and finish grilling.  Or, you can start by broiling in the oven before moving to the skillet. However you cook, press down on the sandwich with a pan or spatula to give it a panini-style crispiness on the outside

5. Get creative

The simplicity of the grilled cheese is what makes it so popular, but little twists like jalapeno peppers, dill pickles or cranberry sauce will make your sandwich legendary. Start experimenting right now. There's no wrong way to make a grilled cheese, but so many right ways!
