FDA Expands Dog Food Recall With More Brands Being Labelled As 'Toxic'

Last month, a recall was announced for three different brands of dog food. Abound, Nature's Place, and Nature's Promise all had issues with their Chicken and Brown Rice recipes.

Each of the affected brands were found to have an elevated level of vitamin D in them, and having this high level could actually be toxic for your dog.

However, this recall has now expanded once again, with more dry dry food kibbles being found to have the same issue of excessive vitamin D.

The FDA has issued an update with the new list of dog foods that are potentially toxic to dog:

The FDA is currently investigating the situation to try and find the source for the contaminated levels, but are warning dog owners to keep a close eye on their pets if they have consumed any of this food.

"FDA scientists have evaluated samples of some of these products, and State and private lab test results indicate that the food contained as much as approximately 70 times the intended amount of vitamin D. Consuming food with such high levels of vitamin D is potentially toxic to dogs and in severe cases may lead to kidney failure and/or death."

The symptoms of elevated vitamin D levels that you need to watch out for include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Increased thirst
  • Vomiting
  • Excessive urination
  • Increased drooling
  • Weight loss

If your dog starts exhibiting these behaviors, go to the vet immediately. "If your pet is having symptoms of vitamin D toxicity, contact a veterinarian immediately," the FDA says. "Provide a full diet history to your veterinarian. You may find it helpful to take a picture of the pet food label, including the lot number."
