Your Kids Will Love these DIY Lava Lamps

Shared

This is a great way to spend a lazy weekend afternoon with the kids! DIY Lava Lamps are so easy to make and you probably have all the materials you need on hand already. Grab some empty water bottles, water, oil, food coloring and Alka-Seltzer tablets and you're ready to go.

In terms of the container you use, basically anything transparent with a lid will work perfectly - water bottles are great but you could also use mason jars or empty soda bottles. We added glitter to ours to get a fun sparkling effect, and you could experiment with adding sequins or small beads.

Materials

  • Clear Water/Soda Bottles with Lids (make sure they're cleaned before using)
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Water
  • Food Coloring
  • Alka-Seltzer Tablets
  • Sparkles (optional)

Directions

Pour vegetable oil in the bottles until they're about 3/4 of the way filled.

Next fill up with water.

After the water is added add 10 drops of food coloring in each bottle. We used green, blue and red but choose the colors you like best.

Now add your glitter (if using). You can also experiment with sequins, small beads, etc.

Now it's time to add the Alka-Seltzer tabs. Once they're added your lava lamps will really come to life! Place a cap on the bottles as to not spill the liquids and save to use again in the future!

How cool are these homemade lava lamps? They're a great way to entertain your kids for the afternoon and are mesmerizing to watch.
