What you need

  • Acrylic Paint with gloss finish
  • Shrinky Dinks plastic sheet
  • Paintbrush
  • Hole punch
  • Baking Sheet + parchment paper
  • metal loop for keyring

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Have your little one wash and dry their hands to prepare for the craft. Paint a generous amount of acrylic paint to the palm of one of their hands and press it onto the sheet of Shrinky Dinks plastic. Make sure you're using gloss paint because the finish enables the handprint to adhere to the plastic. Otherwise your paint will just chip right off.

Allow the paint to dry completely and then write your child's name and age on the handprint with a Sharpie. Even better if your child can have a go at printing their own name!

Use the hole punch to place a hole where you want your metal key loop to go. Keep the hole close enough to the edge so that you can add a keyring after the print bakes. Once the handprints are cut out and punched, place them on a baking sheet that is lined with parchment paper. Bake at 325 degrees for 2-3 minutes.

When you remove your keychain from the oven use a spatula to press it down and flatten it. One the plastic has cooled off you can attach your metal key ring to your new keychain! We like to use metal loops that can attach to a keyring so that they won't damage the plastic when you try to slid it on.

Once your metal loop is added you can attach it to any keychain that works for you! If your feeling extra brave why not try creating a footprint keychain?! These make adorable keepsakes for extended family members and Grandma & Grandpa too.
