Ellen DeGeneres Announces Devastating Death In Her Family

NBC

Ellen DeGeneres is mourning the loss of a beloved family member.

On Jan. 11, DeGeneres revealed on her daytime talk show her father, Elliot DeGeneres has died at the age of 92.

It's been a difficult week for the comedian, as she's also been dealing with the deadly flash floods and mudslides that have been ravaging the Montecito community in California.

On the Wednesday taping of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she went on FaceTime with her neighbor Oprah, to talk about the terrifying destruction.

"It's devastating. We've lost so many lives and it's a tiny community and nobody would've expected, certainly, I did not, that after we survived the fire and the rain came. Who would've expected we have this devastation again with the mudslides, and so soon," Oprah said.

"But we're going to do what we do. We're going to come together and we're going to do what great Americans do all the time. We're going to help each other. We're going to help each other out wherever needed," Oprah added.

Unfortunately, this wasn't the only devastating news she had to share.

The following day, DeGeneres paid tribute to her beloved father who had just passed away.

"Before we go to break, there's something else I want to talk about. I mentioned yesterday when I was talking about all the mudslides that are going on in my community of Montecito, which is heartbreaking, I said that I had a lot going on in my life. In addition to what's going on in Montecito, I lost my dad this week," she said. DeGeneres's father had been married to her mother, Betty DeGeneres, before divorcing in 1970.

DeGeneres displayed a black-and-white picture of the pair in her youth, before continuing.

"He was very proud of me. He loved this show and he was a kind man, very accepting man. There was not one bone of judgment in his body," she said.

The talk show host added her father "was very funny" and believes she and her older brother, Vance, inherited their sense of humor from him.

DeGeneres, whose show is filmed on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California, also shared a touching childhood memory she had of her father.

She shares a touching memory of her father, of when he took the family - who grew up in Louisiana - to Warner Brothers Studios.

"We only took one family vacation. When I was a little girl, we came to this lot, to the Warner Bros. lot, and took the tour and went around. And now, I work on the Warner Bros. lot and I have my own stage with my name on it. So he was really proud of that," DeGeneres added.

Luckily, DeGeneres said she was able to talk to him just before he died. She added 10 minutes before her father passed away, she saw a rainbow above the studio's lot.

"I was leaving the building, and I looked back and there was a rainbow over the Warner Bros. studio. This looks photoshopped," she said. "This is what I saw after I talked to my dad and he died 10 minutes later after that. Pretty amazing... I got a rainbow before he died."
