It's the dreaded diagnosis that every parent doesn't want to hear- your kids have lice. These little creatures make their rounds through classrooms across the country, especially after the weather gets cooler and hats get shared in the playground.

It's not the fact that you have these bugs making your scalp itch that makes you dread the diagnosis, it's how hard they are to get rid of.

Depending on how patient your kid is, this could be a challenge or a complete nightmare in your house.

Contracting lice is not fatal or particularly dangerous, but it can be an unpleasant experience to have them in your hair. They also multiply quickly, so it's important to deal with them as soon as you can.

There are helpful shampoos and products to help remove lice, but they aren't always effective. To treat a whole family of lice, you will need more than just one or two bottles which can get pretty costly. You will also have to spend hours removing each egg, which can be really hard if your kid doesn't have the patience.

Which is why you can try this method instead!

Not only is it cheap, but it doesn't contain any chemicals and you won't have to spend hours dealing with picking out the lice.

Here's what you'll need:

  • A lice comb
  • Mouthwash
  • White wine vinegar
  • A plastic bag or shower cap
  • Towel

What to do:

1. Wet your hair with the mouthwash and then cover it with a shower cap or plastic bag. Let it sit for an hour. The smell of the mouthwash will drive the lice out.

2. Rinse your hair and then apply white wine vinegar to it. Allow the vinegar to sit in your hair covered in the plastic bag or shower cap for another hour. The vinegar helps to get rid of the eggs.

3. Now wash your hair with regular shampoo and comb it out with the lice comb.

If you happen to find out that a case of lice is going around the school, spray your kid's hair with a little mouthwash before they leave the house and it will keep the creatures away.

And their hair will smell minty fresh, it's a win-win!
