One Of The Most Controversial Video Games Of The 90s Is Being Re-Released

It seems we're in the golden age of video game nostalgia, and while Nintendo has attracted the most attention, there's some good news for Sega fans. If you grew up with a Sega CD in your home you're bound to remember Night Trap - unless your parents took it away, that is.

The game made waves when it was released in 1992, both because of its innovative use of real actors in "full motion video" and the huge controversy the game created.

Now, gamers have a chance to see if their nostalgia lives up to the experience of playing this classic, because Night Trap is getting re-released for its 25th anniversary - and you can actually snag a physical copy!

<amp-twitter height="472" width="375" layout="responsive" data-tweetid="856933977805946881"></amp-twitter>

Night Trap let players protect a slumber party full of young women from axe-wielding vampires, with the box boasting the game included "over 1 1/2 hours of real video."

But the game's subject matter also landed Sega in hot water. Parents' groups were outraged by the game's violence and scantily-clad actresses (one of them wears a nightgown). The panic over games like Night Trap and Mortal Kombat was so extreme that there was an actual congressional hearing on violence in video games.

The controversy lead to the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board, which puts warning labels on the front of every game box. It shows how much things have changed since then: when Night Trap came out it in the 90s it got a "mature" rating, now it's only rated "teen."

<amp-youtube height="9" width="16" layout="responsive" data-videoid="CAoCOXBE0yY"></amp-youtube>

The re-release will be available for download on the Playstation 4's digital store, but you can also get a limited edition physical copy, with a cover designed to look like the original Sega CD packaging.

But be warned: this game doesn't really stand up to the test of time. It's closer to a bad horror movie than a real game, but if you want to take a trip down memory lane this might be for you.

Share this post if you remember playing Night Trap!
