The ongoing recall of cars with faulty Takata airbag inflators is already the largest in American history, but it just got even bigger.
A further 1.7 million vehicles from major manufacturers including Subaru, Tesla, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Daimler Vans, Mercedes-Benz, and Ferrari have been recalled because of the potentially deadly airbags.
The airbags, made by Japanese company Takata, feature an inflator that uses explosives to quickly pump up the bag during a crash. But defects in the recalled models can send shrapnel flying through the bag - even without an accident to trigger them.
Already, at least 23 people have been killed in accidents related to the airbags, as hundreds more have been injured.
By last December, more than 50 million vehicles had been recalled because of Takata airbags. Because the enormous, global recall is being carried out in stages, another 10 million cars are expected to be recalled later this year.
The most recent recall follows a recall last September from Honda and Accura that affected 1.4 million vehicles, and another last December from Toyota and Lexus that included 65,000.

- Subaru: 826,144 vehicles from 2010-14 including Foresters, Legacys, and Outbacks.
- Mercedes-Benz: 288,779 vehicles from model years 2010-17.
- BMW: 266,044 vehicles from model years 2000-04.
- Daimler Vans: 159,689 vehicles from model years 2015-17.
- Volkswagen/Audi: 119,394 vehicles from model years 2015-17.
- Tesla: 68,763 Model S hatchbacks from model years 2014-16.
- Ferrari: 11,176 sports cars from model years 2014-17.
