There's an old saying that death comes in threes, and based on the losses the entertainment industry has suffered this week, we're starting to believe there's some truth to this.

On January 2, the world woke up to the news of WWE star "Mean Gene" Okerlund's passing. Mere hours later, it was reported that comedian Bob Einstein, best known for portraying Super Dave Osborne and for his role as Marty Funkhouser in Curb Your Enthusiasm, had died.

Before the end of the day, Daryl Dragon, one half of the legendary musical duo Captain & Tennille, also passed away.

Like both Okerlund and Einstein, Dragon was also 76 years old.

The singer, who found fame in the 1970s alongside his ex-wife and musical partner Toni Tennille, died of renal failure while in a Arizona hospice.

Although Tennille and Dragon's marriage ended after 39 years, their friendship remained strong over the years, and she was by his side at the time of his death, according to Dragon's spokesperson Harlan Boll. She reportedly moved to Arizona to take care of him when his health began to deteriorate.

The pair collaborated on radio hits like "Muskrat Love," "Do That To Me One More Time," and of course, "Love Will Keep Us Together," for which they won a Grammy in 1976.

"He was a brilliant musician with many friends who loved him greatly, Tennille said in a statement following Dragon's death. "I was at my most creative in my life, when I was with him."

Dragon touched many people during his time on Earth, including Mike Love of the Beach Boys. The late entertainer was a keyboardist for the Beach Boys before meeting Tennille at an audition and creating their duo.

Love released a statement to Fox News, paying tribute to his friend and former band mate.

"Daryl Dragon affectionately known as Captain Keyboard was a cherished member of our touring band. He was the modest genius whose penchant for sporting a captain's cap earned him the moniker Captain Keyboard.

Whether in the studio, on stage or just hanging out, he was loved by all of us who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was a genius of the keyboard and along with Toni Tennille achieved great success as the Captain & Tennille.

It's a sad way to start the New Year hearing of his passing. He gave us 'Love Will Keep Us Together': a great thing to remember when we think of him. He left us a great legacy through his music. RIP Captain."

Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys co-founder, took to Twitter to remember Dragon.

"So sad to hear about Daryl Dragon,"Wilson  tweeted. "Daryl was a great guy and a hell of a musician and keyboard player. I feel very bad about this. Love & Mercy to Daryl, his family and friends."

Singer-songwriter and pianist Ben Folds also paid tribute to Dragon on social media.

"Daryl Dragon -Definitely a formative influence on my piano playing, arranging and producing - RIP Mr Dragon...," wrote the Ben Folds Five frontman.

Dragon is survived by his older brother Doug Dragon and two nieces, Kelly Arbout and Renee Henn.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Dragon's family and Tennille during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
