Charlotte Russe To Close Nearly 100 Stores After Filing For Bankruptcy

While online shopping is convenient, its increasing popularity has had a negative impact on many of our beloved mall staples.

There are so many stores that we loved, but can no longer shop at because of what is now known as the great retail apocalypse.

In 2018 alone, nearly 4,000 stores have shuttered, including chains like Toys R Us and Sears, and the situation isn't looking any better so far this year.

We're barely two months into 2019, and so far at least two popular chains have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The latest mall-based retailer to bite the dust is the women's clothing chain Charlotte Russe. The company announced that it has filed for bankruptcy after it "suffered from a dramatic decrease in sales and in-store traffic" and struggled with "the burden of maintaining a large brick-and-mortar presence."

If you're a fan of Charlotte Russe, there is a silver lining: not all stores will shut down.

The company, which operates 500 stores across the country, only plans to close 94 of its stores, so you will still be able to snag trendy but affordable items, at least for now.

Moving forward, Charlotte Russe is hoping to find a new owner and eliminate its huge debt, which sits at around $90 million.

The brand has managed to borrow $50 million from creditors, which should help keep it afloat until a buyer comes along.

As the story goes, Charlotte Russe's downfall can also be blamed on poor sales. In 2018, the company's overall sales dropped to $795 million from $928 million in 2017.

The company believes its marketing strategies have "failed to connect" with its main customers - teens and young adults. They made the mistake of ignoring "the rapisly evolving fashion trends," and instead they "shifted too far towards fashion basics."

Charlotte Russe is hoping to fix this issue not only by going back to its "on-trend, fast-fashion model," but by also having a bigger social media presence.
