We can argue back and forth about the "morality" of nursing in public, but the fact of the matter is that we as a society have sexualized two organs that have been biologically designed for one thing: feeding babies. And while breastfeeding certainly is not the sole marker of womanhood or motherhood since plenty of moms have trouble breastfeeding, it's a totally natural phenomenon that should not be shamed. What on earth could possibly be more important to nourishing a baby?
Still, mothers brave enough to endure the shaming as they breastfeed publicly suffer at the hands of bullies all over the country. There are videos online of men accosting women aggressively in Target for breastfeeding and people writing awful passive-aggressive notes to moms feeding their kids. It's just downright mean.
One mother named Jackie Johnson-Smith was at a restaurant one day when her little one got hungry (and I mean, if they're out to eat, the kiddo should be able to as well).
In a Facebook post, the mom of three recalls her experiences breastfeeding publicly over the years. "I have breastfed three children... I have breastfed them in countless of places both pleasant and unpleasant, discreetly and out in the open. I have gotten many looks and stares," she said
On this occasion, she started breastfed her child in the booth at first before heading somewhere more private to finish up since the fussy little nugget was very hungry. Then she returned to finish up her meal and pay the bill. It was at this point that the server did something that left Jackie in tears.
When she and her husband got the bill for their meal, they noticed a note on the receipt. It said, "I bought one of your pizzas. Please thank your wife for breastfeeding!" In a moment of solidarity, the server performed a sweet act of kindness.
In Jackie's words, "The waitress gave this receipt to my husband. I was speechless and emotional. Although I don't need a pat on the back for feeding my child, it sure felt amazing."

I have gotten many looks and stares, but tonight erases any negativity I have ever received. I ate at Fongs for the first time tonight. Having a fussy baby I nursed him for awhile in the booth and eventually left the table early as to not disrupt the restaurant. The waitress gave this receipt to my husband. I was speechless and emotional. Although I don't need a pat on the back for feeding my child, it sure felt amazing. It is amazing how we women can make each other feel when we empower each other.
The message here is simple: One, breastfeeding is a beautiful and natural thing. Two, women who empower each other are the best women of all!
