The point of horror films is to scare and terrify. You're supposed to jump in fright or be grossed out; part of the terror behind a good movie is the psychological slant. Viewers wonder how much of the film is fiction and how much is based on actual events.

Netflix, though, has created a horror film so ghastly and scary, people can't watch.

Veronica is a Spanish language film directed by Paco Plaza. Since it debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival, it's received great acclaim from horror critics and viewers alike. It holds a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatos.

It features familiar horror film elements such as an Ouija board, possession, and a  blood-stained mattress. The Hollywood Reporter says Veronica has  "some great child performances, plenty of stylistic chutzpah and a strong sense of place."

The plotline of the film is centered around a young girl who uses an Ouija board to contact the dead. She reaches out to the evil spirits, which force her to face frightening and unnerving events. It set in 1992, and Plaza is praised for his attention to period detail.

The young girl calls 911 after using the Ouija board. She is then hospitalized before dying. Plaza obviously takes liberties with these events. the viewer doesn't know what's real-life and which are fictionalized, which adds to the psychological fear.

Norman Wilner,  film  critic for Toronto Now, says Veronica "likely owes more to Plaza wearing out his videotapes of A  Nightmare On Elm Street, Prince Of Darkness and Witchboard as a kid."

Of course, Twitter chimed in. Some say Veronica is indeed the scariest film of the year. While others scoff at this idea. One user  says, "my nine-month-old is scarier than that."

Whether veronica is indeed the most frightening films of the year remains to be seen. Guess we'll just have to watch it for ourselves.
