Keith Urban Reveals What Makes Him Cry Once A Month

Country superstar Keith Urban is crushing gender stereotypes one at a time, and we're loving it.

Despite what society says about men showing vulnerability, the "You'll Think Of Me" singer has never been one to hide his emotional side.

For most of his life, music has been an outlet he uses to channel his feelings, but every once in a while Urban isn't afraid to let it all out off the stage.

Fans of American Idol may remember the Australian-born singer tearing up during Kelly Clarkson's poignant performance of her single "Piece by Piece" on the show in 2016.

The autobiographical song, which talks about Clarkson's husband being a dad that her own father never was, resonated with him because he is a father himself.

"I mean, separate to her incredible gift as a singer, and the song and the performance, the humanity in that moment was just ... you never see that, let alone on television," Urban later told Entertainment Tonight. "I was so grateful to be there to witness it."

A source close to Urban told HollywoodLife.com that the singer was so overwhelmed by the lyrics because he was still mourning the death of his father, who passed away about two months prior.

That same year, in an interview with Rolling Stone the entertainer revealed that he cries a lot more often than people know.

"When I haven't cried in a while, I can tell I get pent-up. Then maybe once a month I have a good cry, one big avalanche of a torrential downpour, and I feel amazing for weeks afterward. The streets are cleaned, the skies are blue, there's no humidity and it's beautiful."

More recently, while on Andrew Denton's Interview, the 50-year-old candidly opened up about what exactly causes him to tear up often.

"Oh well, anything. [It's] accumulative, accumulative things that didn't really warrant a cry at the time, and they add up you know," he explained. "I mean little things, [the] passing of time, kids growing up, the loss of friends, loved ones for all manner of reasons, all of it."

The multiple Grammy Award-winner then touched on how he juggles working and spending time with his wife, actress Nicole Kidman, and their daughters, Sunday Rose, 10, and Faith Margaret, seven.

"I think certainly work life, home life balance is such a rolling reality for so many people. And trying to reconcile those things that all happen in a certain small window of time in your life," he said.

It looks like he's been doing a stellar job of balancing work and family as his 12-year marriage to the 51-year-old actress is now stronger than ever.

The singer admitted that his relationship with Kidman had a rocky beginning because not only did he think she was out of his league, he also "wasn't in a healthy place."

"My wife put an intervention together and it was ... it was divine," he said. "I mean, "˜divine intervention,' but it's true, it really was. It was love in action and the timing was absolutely divine."

He added, "It had nothing to do with whether life was good or bad. "It had nothing to do with any of that stuff. I was an equal opportunity addict. I'd get high when it was sunny, high when it was raining "” it didn't matter. It was something I should have dealt with many, many years before I met Nic, and tried to, but it just never took. I wasn't ready. Simple as that."

Thanks to Kidman's intervention and support, the "Tonight I Wanna Cry" singer managed to overcome his alcohol and drug addiction. He attended rehab a few months after their 2006 wedding and has been sober ever since.

These days, Urban is using his experience as an addict to help those going through the same thing. He offered up some of his wisdom when asked what Demi Lovato needs after her recent drug overdose.

"Just [to have] good people around her and a willingness to want to live a different way if that's what she wants to do," he said on the Australian morning show Today. "It's all up to her."

Thankfully, Lovato has a strong support system in her family, friends, and ex-boyfriend, That '70s Show star Wilmer Valderrama.

It's so refreshing to see a celebrity honestly discuss some of their personal experiences because there are many people out there who can relate.
