Life Hacks: 6 Tips to Improve Your Storage and Get Organized

There are no two ways around it: life is stressful. Whether you're a college freshman trying to balance work, school, and family time; or you're a hardworking professional attempting to fit in playdates, shopping, meal prep, and sleep -- the stresses never stop piling on.

You can never get rid of all the issues in your life that are bringing you stress, but you can mitigate them a bit with some proper planning and careful organizing. No matter how much space you have in your home or how many items you have in your possession, disorganization is one of the main causes of anxiety. The home organization market is worth approximately $17 billion. It's time to address this crucial aspect of your life and get organized!

Here are some excellent tips for decluttering your messy life and improving your storage capacity:

Revamp your closet

Closet space is extremely important for people of all ages. In fact, 20% of people would even be willing to take a six-month pay cut for a bigger closet. You don't have to ask your boss for less pay to improve your closet storage space, however. You don't even have to shell out a lot of cash on remodeling tasks, either. On average, homeowners spend between 1% and 4% of a home's value on remodeling maintenance and repairs. Instead, get creative! Plastic containers are great for clothes storage but they are bulky. Airtight storage bags, on the other hand, can be stacked high and keep a significant amount of clothes stored safely inside.

Use your freezer better

You probably shouldn't keep electronics and other items inside your freezer, but no one wants to open a freezer door and be attacked by frozen bread and loose ice trays. Roughly 87% of people have ice cream in their freezer at any given moment -- but don't be one of the many who just jam ice cream and other frozen products in there with no rhyme or reason. Instead, use vacuum sealed containers, plastic storage bins, and repurpose old (washed) milk containers. Additionally, it's recommended to label everything inside your freezer to avoid confusion. And while you're at it, add a date to everything as well. This will ensure you use older items before more recently purchased ones.

Clear off that space above your cabinets

The space above your cabinets can be used for so much more than just holding dust. Grab a step ladder and clean up that area. Then, you can get a few wire baskets -- which look great -- and store all kinds of items up there. Rather than having wine bottles, coffee beans, and spices all over your counter, utilize that free space above your cabinets.

Mount a few magazine racks on your wall

Just because you don't have any magazine subscriptions doesn't mean you can't use their storage racks. Magazine holders are perfect for storing foil, plastic wrap, and so much more. You can even keep root vegetables on the wall, inside cabinets, or hung-up in another cool, dry place.

Buy or rent a shipping container

If you're really hoping to get a significant amount more space, storage containers are great. There are 17 million shipping containers in the world -- but only 6 million are in use. That means there are 11 million shipping containers that are just sitting there, unused. It's time to change that and keep all kinds of items inside a climate-controlled storage container.

Get rid of your stuff

As a property owner, it's easy to accumulate all kinds of stuff over the years. A lot of those items are probably important -- even essential. A lot of those items might even have some kind of sentimental value attached to them. But a lot of those items are... junk. If you're serious about decluttering your life and freeing up some storage space, consider selling, donating, or simply tossing out all those items that you don't really need.

If you're struggling with too much clutter in your life, a simple deep clean of your home will certainly help. All these tips aren't going to change your life overnight -- but they will make an immediate difference and you'll start feeling much more relaxed and organized. Good luck with your storage plans and try to have some fun!
