Successful Hungarian Players Who Play Abroad

In Hungary, handball and football are also among the most popular sports - no wonder Hungarian players accumulate success abroad as well.

We can also meet Hungarians in world-class clubs - in both women's and men's teams.

Perhaps you have already wondered how Hungarian athletes perform far away from their homeland. According to experts, however, the number of Hungarian players playing abroad will grow only at the beginning of the next year, as they will be playing more and more for the best teams in Europe.

Many Hungarian football fans are aware that our compatriots are leveling their careers in other countries. We can find Hungarian football players abroad at pretty much these countries:

  • Germany
  • Poland
  • Greece
  • Austria
  • Cyprus

So let’s see who are the most successful of them and what the secret of their game is - how they got out abroad and how they cope with the never-ending challenges.

Dominik Szoboszlai

We couldn’t even start the list with another player. After his recent fantastic performance as a Red Bull Salzburg footballer, Szoboszlai transferred to RB Leipzig in early 2021.

The 20-year-old left wing is one of the big surprises of the season in Europe.

He has played in 12 matches of the Austrian league with 4 goals and 7 assists. Leading European teams such as Arsenal or AC Milan competed for it.

Finally, the Hungarian talent chose RB Leipzig. The transfer fee paid by the Germans to get their hands in Szoboszlai was something around 25 million euros.

Péter Gulácsi

The German Bundesliga will not be without Hungarian footballers - it is enough to think of Péter Gulácsi next to Szoboszlai.

RB Leipzig goalkeeper has been one of the central pieces of the Leipzig backbone over the last few years. Just like Szoboszlai, he also transferred from the Salzburg team to Germany.

He has also competed in the Champions League and is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga and in the world given the high level of his recent EURO appearances with the Hungarian team.

Willi Orban

Willi Orban is the third member of the RB Leipzig trio. The player, who also has German roots, has been certified by FC Kaiserslautern.

Like Gulácsi, he also joined the team in 2015. So far, he has played in nearly 200 matches as a member of the Die Bullen - The Bulls in German -. A safe point of defense for RB Leipzig.

With that many Hungarian players, RB Leipzig have been pointed as one of the potential teams to win the Bundesliga next season. You can check out the best bookmakers and odds for that to happen. Use this article bwin fogadás as an example of how things work.

Sallai Roland

Another player in Germany and this time this is Sallai Roland. But don’t worry, this one is not playing for RB Leipzig so far. The Freiburg winger has been a member of the German team since 2018.

Prior to that, he played in the colors of the Cypriot APOEL - with his performance in Nicosia, he earned his place in the Hungarian national team, where he has been in the far post since 2016.

Nemanja Nikolic

One of the best strikers of the Polish Ekstraklasa in the last 12 years is the Serbian-Hungarian dual citizen Nemanja Nikolic.

Although he played in Poland for only 18 months, he managed to gain the devotional love of Polish football fans - especially among the fans of Legia Warszawa.

Nikolić, as a member of the Polish capital team, scored 40 goals in just 56 matches in the Ekstraklasa Polish league. In total, he played 86 times in Legia colors and scored 55 goals.

Although Nikolić is primarily a striker, he also helped his teammates with 10 assists. He won the Polish championship in the 2015/2016 season, and the icing on the cake was meant to grab the Ekstraklasa Golden boot.

If that hadn’t been enough, he also won the Poland National Cup, in that same year. His departure from Europe was such a bad day for the usually speedy Legia Warszawa. The next stop in his career is MLS side Chicago Fire.

Dominik Nagy

Among the top Polish players, there is also room for the 25-year-old winger. Dominik Nagy was an important player of Legia Warszawa, which with his help won the national league, Ekstraklasa, three times.

He played in 84 matches for the Warsaw team and during that time he found the back of the opponent's nets thirteen times and helped his teammates with ten assists.

In Ekstraklasa alone, he has played in 60 games and scored 11 goals, which is an outstanding performance - especially for a winger. He was very famous for “enjoying life” off the pitch, and he certainly didn’t arrive on time for every morning workout.

He appeared in Legia in 2017 and played there until October last year, after which his contract was terminated by mutual agreement.

In January 2021, he will start playing in domestic colors again, as he transferred to the Budapest Honvéd team.

Conclusion

By taking this list as an example, we can see that Hungary players are not only getting contracts with stronger European league clubs, but also becoming more and more important for their teams.

There are some other key destinations to hit though, as nowadays, the English Premier League is a must for every world-class player. However, we’re set to watch some Hungarian players land on British lands in the near future.
