Paul Lynde Had An Unconventional Humor

Fans of Hollywood Squares will remember Paul Lynde with much fondness.

Lynde, who was well-known for his role as Uncle Arthur in Bewitched, held the center square position from 1968 to 1981. Center square was a big deal, and was held by other celebrities such as Whoopi Goldberg and Joan Rivers.

Many will remember Lynde for his hilarious jokes and quips, but there are some aspects to his life that not many will remember.

Though he died much too young, just 55, Lynde is remembered with great respect and a few wild tales he's left behind.

Here are some interesting facts from Paul Lynde's life:

Lynde left "Hollywood Squares" in 1979 due to a salary dispute, but when tabloids caught hold of his departure they assumed it was because of his drinking behavior. Lynde was completely offended by these allegations and sued the magazines for $10 million in damages.

Emmys

Lynde was a gay man, but because the days of "coming out" were still young, he remained single. The actor always explained his bachelorhood as having once had his heart broken in high school and was still too hurt to give another woman a chance.

Lynde's long-term companion, Bing Davidson, died a terrible death right in front of Lynde's eyes. The two were staying at a hotel in California when they both got very drunk. Davidson decided to show-off for Lynde and dangled from the balcony using only his fingertips. He started to fall and Lynde tried pulling him back up, but Davidson fell to his death. Now, the two are buried next to each other in Ohio.
