(Video) The Incredible Edible Water Balloon Is On Track To Save The Environment By Replacing Plastic Water Bottles

What if, instead of reaching for a plastic water bottle, you could pop a little globe into your mouth and for a thirst-quenching drink?

It may sound strange, but people who've tried it love it! The surprising squirt of refreshing water in an edible, biodegradable membrane just might be the solution to Earth's plastic problem.

The ooho! is a biodegradable, edible membrane made of seaweed extract that contains a cool drink of water. You just tear it open for a drink, or pop it into your mouth and eat the whole thing!

The container is an edible, gelatinous sphere with the texture of roe (fish eggs) made entirely of plants and seaweed. Like fruit, it biodegrades in 4-6 weeks and is cheaper than plastic. It can also be colored and flavored.

It's being touted as one of five ideas which could actually change the world! The product was developed by Skipping Rocks Lab in London, U.K.

Their idea was inspired by the culinary technique called spherification, Fast Company reports. Chef Ferran AdriĆ  of the now closed elBulli restaurant in Spain popularized the technique within modernist cuisine.

According to their website, Skipping Rocks Lab hopes to become the leading global producer of seaweed-based packaging with their waste-free alternatives to plastics.

It is estimated that by the end of 2015, the global production and consumption of plastic surpassed 297.5 million tons. According to Eco Watch, 80 percent of annual plastic litter found in the ocean comes from land-based sources.

What do you think? Would you try it?
