America's favorite reality TV couple have finally addressed the divorce rumors that plagued them for years.
Chip and Joanna Gaines rose to fame with their HGTV show Fixer Upper, which became an instant hit for the network and one of the most-watched shows on TV. The couple have capitalized on their success with their own store, a magazine, home improvement books, and partnerships with big name brands like Target.
But fans of the home renovation series were surprised to learn that the couple would be ending the series after season five, which premieres in November. The announcement ignited speculation that the couple were splitting up, a rumor that has popped up now and then since their show first started.
Now, in a surprising interview, Chip admits that there's "a little credence" to those divorce rumors, and that the tension in his marriage with Joanna is part of the reason why Fixer Upper is ending. He even describes worrying that their relationship had reached "a point of no return."
But Chip also has good news for fans...
Rather than splitting up, Chip reveals that he and Joanna decided to end the show partly to protect their marriage.
"For us, the most important thing in the world is Jo and I's relationship, followed very quickly by these four beautiful kids," Chip told Today. The couple have been married for 14 years, and have kids ranging from 12 to seven years old. It seems that keeping that big family happy was difficult while filming a reality show 11 months of the year.
And while Chip says there's "a little credence" to rumors that his marriage was on the rocks, he assures friends in his "inner circle" that "we're as healthy as we've ever been, I just didn't want to continue pushing the envelope to the fullest extent [...] we're really thankful we have the opportunity to sort of step back and take a break."
This guy right here... I get to live life with him. I get to hear his thoughts and benefit from his wisdom and encouragement on a daily basis. The reason I am who I am today is because Chip pushed me to go for it. People think of him as a jokester, and he is. It’s a huge part of why I fell in love with him in the first place. But he is so much more than that. He is the ultimate cheerleader, coach and dream maker. I am so thrilled that his book releases today mostly because I believe it holds truth that the world is in desperate need of. I am always proud to be Chip’s wife but today more than ever. I know this book was a true labor of love. Well done, Chip Carter Gaines! #CapitalGaines @chipgaines
But that break won't last very long, while Chip is promoting his new book Capital Gaines: Smart Things I Learned Doing Stupid Stuff, the couple are also promoting their new Fixer Upper spin-off, Behind the Design, which will explore how Joanna gets design inspiration for their projects.
“Even though it was sad, they get it," Joanna says about the couple's devoted fans. "We have this young, growing family and I just think that was one of the biggest reasons why we wanted to end the show.”
