The number of recalls that have been circulating in the last couple of months have been almost exhausting to keep up with.

It seems like every day there is yet another thing that we need to throw out. From vegetables to cereals, there really has been a wide variety of products affected, and now it's extended to our pet food.

A recall has been issued by Sunshine Mills for the following products:

  • Abound Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe in the 4lb, 14lb and 24lb packages (UPCS - 83556, 83573, 89076 respectively)
  • Nature's Place Real Country Chicken and Brown Rice in the 5lb and 15lb bags (UPCS 72543998959 and 72543998960)
  • Nature's Promise Chicken and Brown Rice in the 4lb, 14lb, and 28lb bags (Best before dates of November 1st - November 8th)

The recall was issued after it was discovered that the food has an elevated level of vitamin D, and while it seems like extra vitamins would be a good thing, it can actually be incredibly dangerous and toxic for your dog.

Symptoms of Elevated Vitamin D Levels:

If your dog is suffering from elevated levels of Vitamin D, you will notice the following symptoms:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Increased thirst
  • Vomiting
  • Excessive urination
  • Increased drooling
  • Weight loss

These initial symptoms are the warning signs, but if they are ignored and the dog is not treated the elevated Vitamin D levels lead to serious issues like renal dysfunction.

Renal dysfunction in dogs is also known as kidney failure, and according to PetMd can be characterized by the following symptoms:

  • Vomiting
  • Lethargy
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Weight loss
  • Increased thirst
  • Lack of appetite (anorexia)
  • Acute blindness
  • Seizures and comas
  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)
  • An increase in the frequency and amount of urination

If you've noticed any of these symptoms, make sure you head to your vet immediately.

Should any of these dog foods be in your home now, return them to your pet store and you'll be refunded the full amount.

Customers can also send their questions directly to the company Sunshine Mills Inc at 800-705-2111 from 7 am to 4 pm Central Time, Monday through Friday or by email at customer.service@sunshinemills.com.
