George Clooney Makes Tragic Comparison Between Meghan Markle And Princess Diana

Meghan Markle was already famous in her own right, but being in a relationship with Prince Harry catapulted her to a new level of international stardom.

Unfortunately, this popularity came with a hefty price.

Ever since making her relationship public, the Suits star has been scrutinized by tabloids for several different reasons, including being a divorcee and breaking certain royal protocol.

Six months into their relationship, Prince Harry was forced to release a statement addressing the harassment his now-wife and her mother, Doria Ragland, were subjected to by the media.

"Some of [the drama] has been hidden from the public"”the nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers in order to get to her front door; the attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed; the substantial bribes offered by papers to her ex-boyfriend; the bombardment of nearly every friend, co-worker, and loved one in her life," read the statement. "This is not a game"”it is her life and his."

Even after marrying into the royal family, the hoopla around the Duchess of Sussex has not died down. In fact, it only seems to  have worsened and it's fueled by none other than her father Thomas Markle and half-sister Samantha Markle, who have been feeding stories to the media.

While Meghan and Harry have refused to comment on the ongoing drama, some famous people have been coming to their defense.

This week, George Clooney has opened up about the "irresponsible" treatment of Meghan by the media.

The actor, who attended the royal wedding with his wife Amal Clooney, compared Meghan's current situation to that of Princess Diana's, whose tragic death has long been blamed on the paparazzi who chased her through the streets of Paris.

"She's a woman who is seven months pregnant and she has been pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was and it's history repeating itself," Clooney ominously said in an interview with Australia's Who Magazine.

"We've seen how that ends," he added, referring to the car crash that killed Diana in 1997.

Clooney also slammed media outlets for teaming up with Thomas and sharing the contents of a heartbreaking letter Meghan had written to her father after the wedding fiasco.

"I can't tell you how frustrating that is, just seeing them broadcast a letter from a daughter to a father," the Catch-22 star said. "She's getting a raw deal there and I think it's irresponsible and I'm surprised by that."

Just days before Clooney's interview was published, another royal opened up about the intense bullying of the duchess.

Princess Tessy of Luxembourg took to Twitter share her thoughts on the issue.

"It's not nice to talk badly about someone else just because one can, as he or she takes advantage of the anonymity of the web. Stay Kind!!! it's the new cool! She does not deserve that," she wrote.

Last week, five women from Meghan's closest circle of friends also spoke out about the "global bullying" their friend is constantly subjected to.

"Meg has silently sat back and endured the lies and untruths, we worry about what this is doing to her and the baby," a former co-star of the mother-to-be told People. "It's wrong to put anyone under this level of emotional trauma, let alone when they're pregnant."

Meghan's friends also shut down many of the rumors that her estranged family have been spreading about her, explaining that even though she's earned a new title, nothing has changed when it comes to who she is.

"We had a couple of days together recently. Her husband was out of town on work. In the room she made up for me, there was a candle lit by the bed, slippers and a robe. We were the only two in the house. It was our time. She made the most lovely meals. She made tea every day. It was raining and muddy outside, so the dogs got all dirty, and she's wiping them off with towels. How much she loves her animals, how much she loves her friends, how much she loves feeding you, taking care of you "” none of that has changed," a friend from Los Angeles said.

They added that the way the duchess behaves in public is exactly how she is at home.

"When you see her at walkabouts, when she crouches down to talk to the kids and genuinely has real conversations with people, that's Meg," her former co-star added.

We're glad to see those close to Meghan standing up for her. With a strong support system like this, she will be able to rise above it all.
