When Sarah Dempsey went in to the RSPCA Australia, she just wanted someone to keep her company. She lives alone and was hoping to find a cat to stay with her for a long time.

That is, until, she found Jamie.

Jamie is a 13-year-old cat who was surrendered to the RSPCA after his owner got too old and could no longer care for him. When Jamie was brought in to the shelter, he had the flu, bad teeth, and kidney problems. The senior cat had his teeth removed by the shelter, but they were worried no one would want to adopt Jamie because he was older.

But when Sarah walked in to the shelter, she knew it was meant to be.

"When I first met him, he was asleep, but woke up as I bent down to look at him," Dempsey says. "He clearly wanted some pats so I stuck my hand through the slot of the enclosure and he head-bumped me and purred. Later the staff let him out to see how he was with me and he was so affectionate. I knew he'd rescue me from feeling alone, and I'd do the same for him."

Now, the two are inseparable.

But Sarah says Jamie won't sleep unless this one thing happens.

Sarah has to be holding Jamie's paw or his tail, or he's not napping.

"If I let go he wakes up, meows, and claws my hand back to him," Dempsey said. "I think we've bonded already. He won't leave my side. He is extremely affectionate, head-bumping and weaving around my legs. He likes talking to me at night and follows me around my apartment."

It's odd for a cat to be so affectionate, but senior cats often recognize when they have been given a second chance. Jamie is so thankful that Sarah took him home, and I'm sure she feels the same way.
