Dating can be hard for anyone, but there's an added level of difficulty when your parents are politicians. Everything you do is under a microscope, and finding someone with shared interests and life experiences can be tricky. For Jenna Bush Hager, she thought she was doing her sister Barbara a favor when she tried to set her up with Prince Harry.
"I interviewed Prince Harry once. We get to the shoot, we're at the Invictus Games. It is so sunny...we can barely open our eyes," Bush Hager recalled on Today. "And he's like, 'Can we do this?' I'm like, 'Prince Harry, is that you?' And he has really beautiful light eyes, which are sensitive to the sun. I know, because my daughters have light eyes. So Prince Harry was like, 'We have to wear sunglasses, don't you think?'"
The expectant mom said that both her and the prince put on sunglasses for the interview, but she believes it affected their connection.
"I regretted it because the pictures...it was like a barrier between us," she said. "And I tried to set him up with my sister and it didn't work...This is before Meghan, obviously before baby Archie, this is long ago."
Bush Hager suggested to Harry that he meet up with her sister as somewhat of a blind date, but things didn't really go as planned.
"I felt like maybe if he could see straight into my eyes...that could have worked if my sunglasses weren't blocking that match," the host said. "He said, 'Let's talk later. But then he got married to Meghan Markle."
The actual interview was pretty cringe-worthy, too.
“Does it make you laugh that people are already asking you about children? Bush Hager asked him at the time. "I mean, it’s sort of jumping ahead a couple steps.”
“Everybody’s always asking me. I have no idea. I haven’t even got a girlfriend at the moment,” Harry replied.
“I have a single sister, and she feels the same way," Bush Hager pushed. "Listen, she’s available. She’s going to kill me.”
“We can talk maybe off air,” Harry replied.
“Okay, I’ll give you her number,” the host said.
Bush Hager gave an interview about the potential set up in 2016, and admitted then that it was a joke and her sister hated it.
"No, that was sort of a joke, you know?" she admitted. "Obviously my sister was humiliated that I would even bring it up, but that was really a joke. He's an awesome guy."
In the end, everything obviously worked out. Harry married Meghan Markle (in case you hadn't heard), and Barbara Bush married screenwriter Craig Coyne last October.
I understand that Bush Hager was trying to make a joke, but asking a prince about dating your sister in the middle of an interview is pretty unprofessional, if you ask me.
