Katharine McPhee Announces Devastating Family Tragedy

Katharine McPhee has been in the headlines a lot lately following her engagement to David Foster nearly a year after they began dating.

The 35-year-old American Idol alum revealed that the 68-year-old record producer proposed while they were on a romantic getaway in Italy.

"He did it at the top of this mountain in Anacapri," she told Jared Eng of Just Jared. "Totally dark, only stars." She jokingly added, "Thankfully he didn't push me off the cliff. He said it was one or the other. And in the end he spared me."

Sadly, her happiness was soon followed by heartbreak.

A few days ago, McPhee revealed that she would be missing from the weekend's performances of the musical Waitress due to a family emergency.

"Hey my 'Waitress' fans...I'm so so sorry to inform you I will be out this weekend from the shows. I'm having to fly back to LA right now for a family emergency," she wrote in a statement on Twitter. "It breaks my heart to disappoint anyone. Sending all my love."

Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse and McPhee and her family are now mourning the death of her father, Daniel McPhee.

She took to social media to announce the devastating news and pen a touching tribute to her late dad.

"I can't believe I'm even writing this," she wrote on Instagram. "But it is with heavy heart that I share that my sweet sweet Papa left this earth yesterday morning. We as a family are completely heartbroken and devastated. He was my biggest fan, my biggest champion, always telling me to "˜Give em hell kid!'"

She continued, "He was so kind and caring and made sure we knew how much he loved us. Not sure my heart will ever be the same."

McPhee has boasted about her love for her dad on numerous occasions over the years, so we can't begin to imagine what she's going through at the moment.

She noted that she's especially sad that her father couldn't be there to see her Broadway debut, but she still has plans to get back to work next week and hopes "he can watch it in peace and from up above."

"Thank you to all my friends who've been so loving and supportive these last 48 hours. I love you Papa. I already miss you so much. This hurts," she ended the note.

In addition to her fiance, McPhee has her sister Adriana McPhee and mother Patricia "Peisha" McPhee, to lean on during the grieving process.

Our thoughts and prayers are with McPhee and her family during this time.
