Pope Sparks Controversy: Says 'Better To Be Atheist Than Hypocritical Catholic'

Pope Francis is no stranger to controversy. His world views and opinions about traditional Catholic practices have shaken up many in the Christian community.

This Thursday, Pope Francis delivered some scathing criticism to members of his own Church. Catholics were shocked to hear the Pope suggest that it is better to be an atheist than one of "many" hypocritical Catholics leading double lives.

He said: "How many times have we all heard people say 'if that person is a Catholic, it is better to be an atheist."

While many believers were scandalized by what the Pope's bold statement, others supported his strong words.

Since he took up the mantle of the papacy, he has addressed the Church's long-held beliefs about homosexuality, poverty, women's equality and the right to die.

Do you agree with what he said? Or was this an insult to Christians? Let us know in the comments below.
