Restaurant Owner Hits Back After Couple Leaves A Racist Note On Their BIll

No matter where you go there will always be ignorant people out there. Usually they are hard to spot, because common decency stops a lot of people from sharing bigoted beliefs to strangers.

Occasionally, but far too often, racists will make rude comments, threatening gestures or any other act that might make someone feel less welcome. Before social media there wasn't much to be done about it. Someone who was victimized could tell their friends or family, but it wouldn't go much beyond that.

Social media changed everything, for better and worse. Now we see just how many racist incidents, like vulgar signs or refusal of service, happen every day. The good part is that it's easier to call out the perpetrators and offer support to the victims.

Santiago Orosco, the owner of Under the Moon Cafe in New Jersey, took to Facebook to call-out a couple who treated one of his waitresses poorly. He says they received great service and even complimented the food, but when they paid their bill they left no tip.

While no doubt disappointing, not leaving a tip is hardly a racist action, but when the waitress turned over the bill she saw something that made her burst into tears.

"Don't tip immigrants," was scrawled across the back of the bill.

Orosco, himself an immigrant, had enough.

I apologize in advance for what may be a lengthy post. Thursday night we had a couple come in to dine at our restaurant,...

"Thursday night we had a couple come in to dine at our restaurant, they were in their mid to late 40's, raved about the food, the décor and the service," he began his post.

"Upon arrival they seemed very excited about dining at Under the Moon, complementing the ambiance, as well as all the recommendations that our server had made. At the end of service our server grabbed the check from the table, told the customers goodnight and thanked them as they were leaving.

While our server was closing out for the evening and reconciling sales receipts, she noticed that these customers had written a note on the back of their bill stating, "DON'T TIP IMMIGRANTS". I can only assume that they heard our American multi-lingual server speak Spanish to another employee. I am utterly shocked at this blatant ignorance."

At Under The Moon Our prayers and support go out to the victims, families and friends of this horrible tragedy. LOVE CONQUERS HATE!!!

Orosco says his family came to America 13 years ago. When he arrived he says the community "embraced" him and his family. He said he came to America for a better future, and with hard work he achieved it.

"At Under The Moon we accept all people but not ignorance and discrimination. PLEASE DO NOT COME BACK"

He finished his post by noting that the waitress is not an immigrant, just an American who can also speak Spanish.

Many people voiced support on the Facebook post. One even promised to cover the tip that was denied the waitress.

Many others voiced skepticism. It's true that many of the high profile accounts of racist actions have turned out to have been faked for attention. One major difference this time is that the identity of the waitress has been withheld.

We choose to believe this story and wish nothing but the best for Under The Moon, Orosco, and the waitress.
