Robert De Niro Is The Latest Target Of Suspicious Packages

David Shankbone/NBC News

On October 24, it was reported that several prominent political figures as well as CNN's New York City office were sent suspicious packages that contained "potential explosive devices."

The U.S. Secret Service confirmed that packages were found near the Chappaqua, New York home of former President Bill Clinton and his wife, presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, on Tuesday night.

The agency also intercepted packages sent to other senior Democrats, including former President Barack Obama as well as California congresswoman Maxine Waters.

Former CIA director Jon Brennan, liberal philanthropist and activist George Soros, and former Attorney General Eric Holder were also targeted.

In Soros' case, a large envelope containing a "pipe bomb" was found in the mailbox of his home in Bedford, New York. An employee made the startling discovery, and police were able to detonate the bomb as a precaution. There were no injuries.

The Eighth Target

As of now it's unclear how many of these packages have been mailed out, but on Thursday morning, it was reported that a package, similar to the ones sent to the aforementioned figures, arrived at a Manhattan building where actor Robert De Niro's production company and restaurant are located.

New York Police Department revealed that both Tribeca Enterprises and Tribeca Grill were empty when the package containing a device similar to the ones found in the other envelopes.

Like all the other packages, the one sent to De Niro, who has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, included a return address belonging to Democratic US Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida.

However, authorities don't have information that confirms she's responsible.

Police have sent the package to a secure facility in the Bronx, and an investigation is already underway.

Shortly after news of the attempted bombings broke, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio held a press conference during which he said "this clearly is an act of terror attempting to undermine our free press and leaders of this country through acts of violence."

President Trump Reacts

President Trump also spoke out and promised that "the full weight of our government is being deployed to conduct this investigation. We will spare no resources or expense in this effort."

Despite his previous criticism of his opponents, Trump called for unity during his speech and it was received with a standing ovation.

"We have to come together and send one very clear, strong, unmistakable message that threats or acts of political violence have no place in the United States of America," he said. "This egregious conduct is abhorrent to everything we hold dear and sacred as Americans. We are extremely angry, upset, unhappy about what we witnessed this morning, and we will get to the bottom of it."

The FBI has made this investigation their highest priority and have asked the public to be as vigilant as possible because it's possible that additional packages have been mailed to different locations.
