The country is reacting to frightening news out of Newtown, Connecticut on the anniversary of what was once the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.

Police say children were dismissed from Sandy Hook Elementary School, and the building was evacuated today, December 14th, on the sixth anniversary of the shooting that killed 20 children and six staff members.

The elementary school was demolished and rebuilt, following the 2012 shooting.Town of Netown

Police in Newtown say the school was evacuated after they received a bomb threat at 9 a.m. The threat was later determined to not be credible, but out of an abundance of caution and anxiety in the town, classes were cancelled for the day.

Police also confirmed that the threat in Newtown was unrelated to a slew of bomb threats made by email on Thursday.

Across the country, schools are marking the anniversary with moments of silence and by lowering their flags to half-mast.

Ned Lamont, Connecticut's governor-elect, issued a statement on the anniversary through social media.

"Today, our state and country remember the innocent lives lost at Sandy Hook School," he wrote.

"No words can describe the loss of these children and educators. No sense can be made of something so utterly senseless."
