Congressmen Put Aside Their Differences For A Cross-Country Road Trip

<div><p>It sounds like the start of a bad comedy movie: after a <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/14/us/northeast-winter-weather/index.html">freak snowstorm blanketed the east coast</a>, two congressmen were left stranded in Texas. With no other way for the two of them to get to Washington for their first votes the next day, the two agreed to rent a car and drive there together.</p><p>Or course, one just happened to be a Democrat &nbsp;- Beto O'Rourke from El Paso, Texas - while the other was a Republican - Will Hurd from San Antonio.</p><p>Together they put aside their differences for a 1,600 mile journey filled with laughs, learning and doughnuts. </p><amp-iframe sandbox="allow-scripts allow-same-origin" layout="responsive" frameborder="0" height="9" width="16" src="https://www.washingtonpost.com/video/c/embed/52341746-0966-11e7-bd19-fd3afa0f7e2a"></amp-iframe><p><!-- [invalid-shortcode] --> </p><p></p><p>While the pair don't see eye to eye on everything, O'Rourke says they learned to "disagree without being disagreeable" over the course of the trip.</p><p>Of course there were lots of chances for them to get to know each other along the way. The congressmen stopped at Austin's SXSW festival, Graceland, and Memphis's famous Gibson's Doughnuts. </p><p>Their rented Chevy Impala was noisy with laughter and music, including Willie Nelson, Kansas and Johnny Cash.</p><div><amp-facebook data-href="https://www.facebook.com/BetoORourkeTX16/photos/a.463064457092746.102308.460776160654909/1427561567309692/?type=3" layout="responsive" height="600" width="640"></amp-facebook></div><p><!-- [invalid-shortcode] --></p><p></p><p>People from across the country followed the pair on social media, as they livestreamed the whole trip on their phones.</p><p>They even took questions about political hot topics from viewers, calling their stream a national, bipartisan town hall.</p><div><figure><amp-img src="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/El-Paso-Times.jpg" title="" alt="" height="9" width="16" layout="responsive"></amp-img><figcaption class="op-vertical-center"><cite>El Paso Times</cite></figcaption></figure></div><p>By the end of their journey the next day, the two got along so well viewers were suggesting every politician should have to go on a trip like this!</p><p>Because of traffic the pair didn't make it to Washington as quickly as they planned, but they both made a lifetime of memories along the way.</p><p><strong>Share if you think we can all learn to get along!</strong></p></div>
