Suri Cruise Is Turning 12: Inside Her Complicated Relationship With Her Father

Life moves pretty fast, and nothing reminds us of that like watching celebrity children grow up before our eyes.

It seems like only yesterday when Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were "TomKat," one of Hollywood's most recognizable power couples.

But just like "BrAngelina," the couple went their separate ways in 2012.

But many fans have wondered how the couple's daughter, Suri, has fared since the divorce.

"A stable, innocent childhood"

Reports from insiders and photos of Holmes and Suri seem to show that the Dawson's Creek actress has raised her daughter almost as a single parent.

The last time Cruise was seen in public with his daughter was September 2013, just a year after his divorce with Holmes was finalized.

Recently, Holmes has shared photos of Suri - who's about to turn 12 - on her Instagram account.

Speaking to Town and Country about parenting, Holmes revealed that she has put her acting career on the back-burner to focus on raising Suri out of the spotlight.

"My child is the most important person to me," she explained, "and her upbringing is paramount to my work right now."

"It's very important that I'm present and she has a stable, innocent childhood."

A New Flame

Suri's mother has also made headlines by stepping out in public with her rumored boyfriend, actor Jamie Foxx.

The pair have reportedly been together for years, but were forced to hide their relationship because of a strange clause in Cruise and Holmes's divorce settlement.

RadarOnline reports the clause guaranteed Holmes millions of dollars in child support payments, but only if she did not discuss her marriage to Cruise or publicly date anyone for five years.

Holmes and Foxx made their first public appearances just after the five-year deadline would have expired.

But while Foxx may be helping to raise Suri, Cruise has come under fire for avoiding his own daughter.

"If she asked me to be there, I would have been there."

Since his split from Holmes, Cruise has been criticized a number of times for not visiting his daughter enough.

After admitting to not seeing his daughter for 100 days in a row, Cruise explained in a deposition that he spoke to her on the phone every day.

The actor also blamed his busy schedule for the time away from Suri.

"If she had asked me to be there, I would have been there," Cruise said. "I would have worked it out in any way I could."

"It's just a different set of circumstances. It certainly does not mean that I've abandoned my daughter."

But last year, In Touch reported that Cruise did not see Suri on Father's Day, despite being just 30 minutes away from her.

One explanation for Cruise's allegedly cold attitude toward Suri involves his religion, Scientology.

Supressive Persons

Cruise has answered rumors that he does not visit Suri because she, or her mother, is listed as a "Suppressive Person" by the Church of Scientology.

In Scientology, Suppressive Persons are individuals who block another person's spiritual growth, and are usually shunned by practicing members of the church.

But Cruise said that was "a distortion and simplification of the matter."

"I don't want to just give an oversimplification of religious doctrine," he added.

Cruise has confirmed that Suri is not a Scientologist.

And the actor seems to be on good terms with his children Bella and Connor - who are Scientologists - from his earlier marriage to actress Nicole Kidman.

Hopefully Suri's parents can work out their differences, for her sake!
