This Team Of Miracle Workers Make People's Dying Wishes Come True

Kees Veldboer, an ambulance driver from the Netherlands, had his life changed forever by one simple request. He was doing a routine part of his job the day it happened, driving a terminally ill patient from one hospital to another.

But the patient had a final request: he had been cooped up in the hospital for months, and he would probably never get a chance to get some fresh air again. He hoped Veldboer would stop, and let him enjoy the sunshine by the riverside one last time

Veldboer did, and when he saw how happy the simple gesture made the patient he knew he had found his purpose in life.

<amp-img src="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Icecream.jpg" srcset="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Icecream_GH_content_550px.jpg 550w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Icecream_GH_content_650px.jpg 650w" sizes="89vw" title="" alt="" height="9" width="16" layout="responsive"></amp-img>
Getting ice cream one last time.Stichting Ambulance Wens

<amp-img src="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Wedding.jpg" srcset="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Wedding_GH_content_550px.jpg 550w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Wedding_GH_content_650px.jpg 650w" sizes="89vw" title="" alt="" height="9" width="16" layout="responsive"></amp-img>
Going to her granddaughter's wedding.Stichting Ambulance Wens

Shortly after, Veldboer started the Ambulance Wish Foundation. We're all familiar with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the charity that grants wishes for children with terminal conditions. Veldboer's charity does the same thing, except for adults.

With a team of medical personnel, a fleet of special ambulances and some medical equipment, there are no wishes - large or small - that Veldboer and his team can't grant.

<amp-img src="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Riding-horse.jpg" srcset="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Riding-horse_GH_content_550px.jpg 550w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Riding-horse_GH_content_650px.jpg 650w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Riding-horse_GH_content_750px.jpg 750w" sizes="89vw" title="" alt="" height="9" width="16" layout="responsive"></amp-img>
Riding a horse one final time.Stichting Ambulance Wens

Since 2006 the organization has brought joy to over 7,000 people in their final days. They manage to grant about 4 every day, and it can be surprising what people ask for.

<amp-img src="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Ocean.jpg" title="" alt="" height="9" width="16" layout="responsive"></amp-img>
Visiting the ocean one last time.Stichting Ambulance Wens

<amp-img src="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Giraffe.jpg" srcset="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Giraffe_GH_content_550px.jpg 550w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Giraffe_GH_content_650px.jpg 650w" sizes="89vw" title="" alt="" height="9" width="16" layout="responsive"></amp-img>
Visiting his favorite giraffe.Stichting Ambulance Wens

One man, a maintenance worker at a zoo, asked to see his favorite giraffe one last time. Another patient wanted to see her favorite painting again.

But others have simpler requests, like visiting family. One patient just asked to leave the hospital and visit their home again.

The foundation even arranged for one woman to travel back to Romania, so she could die surrounded by her family.

<amp-img src="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Painting.jpg" srcset="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Painting_GH_content_550px.jpg 550w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Painting_GH_content_650px.jpg 650w" sizes="89vw" title="" alt="" height="9" width="16" layout="responsive"></amp-img>
Seeing her favorite painting.Stichting Ambulance Wens

<amp-img src="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Kees---LG.jpg" srcset="https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Kees---LG_GH_content_550px.jpg 550w, https://www.shared.com/content/images/2017/03/Kees---LG_GH_content_650px.jpg 650w" sizes="89vw" title="" alt="" height="9" width="16" layout="responsive"></amp-img>
Gers!

Despite the incredible things his charity does, Veldboer remains humble.

"I'm just a very ordinary Dutch guy who does what he likes best, and my hobby is helping others," he told the BBC.

"I've learned that if you follow your heart and do things your own way, people will support you."

Share this post and tell us what you last wish would be!
