Arrest Made In Serial Letter Bomb Case

Global News

There has finally been an arrest after nearly a dozen suspicious packages were sent to prominent Democrats and outspoken Trump critics.

On Monday, a package was found addressed to George Soros, a billionaire well-known for his funding of Democratic candidates. An employee opened the package, finding a pipe looking as if it were rigged to explode. The package was placed in a secluded area and the police were called.

The investigation quickly grew as more packages were sent to prominent figures like Hillary Clinton, Congresswoman Maxine Waters and actor Robert De Niro. De Niro has been a vocal opponent of Trump's policies of late and is often quoted in left-leaning publications. By Friday, 11 packages had been found and addressed to:

  • Barack Obama
  • Hillary Clinton
  • Maxine Waters
  • former CIA Director John Brennan
  • former Vice-President Joe Biden
  • former top ranking Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz
  • former Attorney General Eric Holder.

On Friday, a package addressed to Senator Cory Booker was found in a Florida post office. Police reportedly searched the office for hours. It may have been the lead that led to the arrest, but no confirmation has been given.

What we do know is that the arrested individual is a man, Cesar Sayoc Jr, and he was arrested in south Florida. A Massive police presence is just outside of Plantation, Florida, where authorities are apparently attempting to remove a suspicious white van from the premises.

CNN has also been a target of the would-be bomber. Two suspicious packages were mailed to the news network's New York office, resulting in evacuations. The cable news station is often cited by Trump for its reporting and has become a target in some right-leaning circles.

Authorites have announced a press conference for Friday afternoon where more light may be shed on the arrest, and if this marks the end to a scary time for Democrats.

The bombs, although none have successfully detonated, mark a low point in political discourse. It's hard to remember in recent memory when there's been such a hostile divide between the two parties that form the government.

The president hasn't clearly addressed the situation, but did hit back at CNN after they implied the bombings are a result of his Twitter attacks.

"Funny how lowly rated CNN, and others, can criticize me at will, even blaming me for the current spate of bombs," he tweeted early Friday morning. "Yet when I criticize them they go wild and scream 'it's just not Presidential!'"

The midterm elections are just days away and many races appear to be neck and neck as the Democrats try to wrestle control of the House and Senate away from their Republican counterparts.
